History
Development of the land in 1927 in Truro, now known as Sunset Acres, was originally owned by the Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. At the time Dr. Stanley Rheimer M.D. was a member of the medical staff at the Lankenau Hospital and he directed the summer laboratory in what is now cottage #2.
In 1928 Cancer research was done in the laboratory, working on one-cell sea animals: clams, oysters, quahogs, sea clams and mussels from Cape Cod Bay. These animals were all found on the beach at Great Hollow Road as well as along the shores of the Pamet River.
In 1950+/- the Truro property was sold to Bill and Eva Joseph who in 1952 rehabbed cottages #1 and #2, and proceeded to build three additional cottages, #3, #4, and #5, as well as an office building. This was the beginning of the cottage rental business known as “ Sunset Acres “.
In 1961 the Truro property was purchased from Bill and Eva Joseph by Trinity Realty Trust ( Louis F. DiGiovanni and Francis A. Obert ). Cottage #1 was rehabbed again…..the fireplace removed and a new large bedroom added. In 1968 Francis A. Obert, fondly known as “ Obie “ by all, became sole owner.
In 2010 the Truro property was purchased by Joseph Obert, the youngest of the Obert siblings, along with his wife Marybeth. Fresh ideas, various upgrades and improvements have been added by Marybeth & Joe, maintaining the unique, quiet, down to earth atmosphere set in place by Joe's parents Blanid & Obie.
2012 - This year marks the 50th year the Obert Family has owned and operated Sunset Acres cottage colony. We all look forward to celebrating this milestone with all our longtime loyal guests. Sunset Acres has built a clientele list of 90% repeat vacationers who have all contributed to the development of the close knit summer destination getaway.
